Different types of cockroaches and ways to get rid of them
Cockroaches consume human food and contaminate it with saliva and droppings. Cockroaches help transmit diseases such as bacteria that cause food poisoning, and cockroaches are a source of allergens at home, second only to house dust. Read on to learn how to get rid of cockroaches for good.
What is the evidence that the house is infested with cockroaches?
Evidence of infection includes the following:
Small cockroach droppings, egg sacks and skins shed as a result of cockroach molting.
Unpleasant odors in cupboards or other areas. Damage to fabrics, clothing, shoes and various household items such as books.
What plants are affected by cockroaches?
Cockroaches do not generally bother plants but sometimes Australian cockroach may feed on seedlings.
What types of cockroaches are there in the house?
There are more than 4,500 species of cockroaches in the world. Although most types of cockroaches are not interested in infesting homes, there are quite a few cockroaches that do attack homes.
German cockroaches
The German cockroach is the most common cockroach because it reproduces very quickly (each egg sac or egg capsule can produce 20-40 baby cockroaches) even one female in your home can produce a cockroach of more than 30,000 individuals in one year.
Unlike other species of cockroach, the female German cockroach carries her egg sacs with her until they are ready to hatch.
This means cockroach infestations spread easily and can be difficult to control.
All cockroaches have flat, broad bodies with long hind legs and antennae. Their wings lie flat on their backs and most of these cockroaches are black or brown.
However, the German cockroach tends to be light brown with two parallel dark streaks running from the head to the wings.
brown cockroaches
Brown cockroaches love warm, dry areas and are usually found inside walls or electronic devices such as televisions or refrigerators.
The brown cockroach is a flying cockroach. This species hates water and does not like to live in wet places.
They are about 0.5 inches long and are dark brown in colour. Both males and females have light yellow stripes on their wings and abdomen.
American cockroaches
While the American cockroach is not the most common type of cockroach, it is the largest.
This species also has a long life span of about two years.
These cockroaches are sometimes called the "sewage cockroach" or "the palmetto bug." They can reach 1-3 inches in length and tend to be brown or reddish brown with light yellow edges around their bodies.
oriental cockroach
They are glossy black or dark brown in color, and adults are about an inch long. Females have very short wings and males have wings that cover about half of the abdomen.
This cockroach is usually found in cool, dark and damp places such as sewers and basements. Adult nymphs and cockroaches are relatively slow and often live on the ground in drains.
They also live outdoors under stones, debris, and vegetation where they can enter buildings through doorsteps, vents, and other openings. Oriental cockroaches are particularly filthy because they often feed on garbage, human and animal waste, and decaying organic matter.
wood cockroaches
Although the usual habitat of these cockroaches is outdoors, they often appear in homes, especially in wooded places. Adult crickets are about 1 inch long and all stages of these crickets are brown.
Unlike the other crickets mentioned, the male wood crickets can fly excellently and both sexes are attracted to light.
Wood cockroaches are primarily outdoor crickets that live in the open air. They cannot stay permanently inside buildings and homes and can be a nuisance during spring and summer when they enter homes in droves from outside.
Natural remedies to prevent cockroaches and insects from invading the home
mint
Peppermint oil is one of the most effective essential oils in repelling cockroaches. Make a mixture of salt water and peppermint oil and spray it on the infested areas of the house. However, this is not a way to get rid of cockroaches overnight. You will only notice a difference after continuous application.
vinegar
Simply take some hot water and then mix it with a little white vinegar and stir it well, then wipe the floors and clean surfaces with this solution and pour this solution into the kitchen drains at night. This will sterilize and disinfect pipes and drains and will keep cockroaches away.
neem
Neem has been used as a home remedy for cockroaches and other pests over the years. Neem oil or powder contains powerful ingredients that can kill cockroaches.
Mix a small amount of neem oil with water in a spray bottle and spray it on places where you have seen these pests. However if you are using neem powder, all you have to do is sprinkle it on the cockroach infested areas at night and repeat the process in the morning.
coffee
You can use some ground coffee to deter these pests, but not in the way you might expect.
Cockroaches are attracted to the aroma of ground coffee, which means they can make the perfect trap.
The smell will attract pests to the trap where they cannot escape until they can dispose of the contents afterwards.
Dishwashing liquid (dishwashing liquid)
A mixture of soapy water can suffocate and kill cockroaches and is particularly effective against German cockroaches. Mix four tablespoons of dish detergent in a liter of water and spray it on where you notice roaches.

If you hire an exterminator company to get rid of cockroaches, what do you expect to happen?
